Good Evening lovelies!
I apologize for the long absence, but I was off in Germany studying abroad! It was amazing, and it couldn't have come at a better time.
Now unless you've been living under a rock, you already know that EXO's Kris filed suit against SM Entertainment to have his contract be terminated with the company. Fortunately, since I was in Germany for the past two weeks, I could stay away from the internet and from most of the crazy fan wars that were circulating.
Unfortunately, that left me to obsess in my own head.
And after thinking about this for a good long while, I had to ask myself something.
Is the escape really worth it?
Kpop, specifically EXO, has been my escape for the past year. Whenever something would go wrong in my life, I'd turn to these pretty, shiny idols to make me feel better and push away the real world. In doing so, I did something that I told myself I would never do. I somehow forgot that idols are people too. And I'm incredibly disappointed in myself for doing so. These idols work so hard and in such terrible conditions to make their fans happy, and a lot of fans seem to think it's all sunshine and rainbows for them, or they just don't care either way and just want the shiny costumes and catchy music.
I was wary to get into Kpop for that very reason, but somehow when EXO came along, I got sucked in. The logical part of my brain was screaming about the JYJ lawsuit, and being a conscious consumer, but the part of me that somehow needed an escape was much stronger than logic.
I had gotten so sucked in that when the news of Kris's lawsuit broke out, it hit me like a bomb. I actually cried. And not just getting teary eyed like a Morning Musume graduation, I mean like the ugly cry. It was bad.
But at the same time, it was the perfect wake up call. Reading accounts of his poor health and other such things that I will not mention to give him some sort of privacy, set alarm bells going off in my head.
This is wrong. This whole system--this machine. That's the thing about Kpop. It's a machine, and the idols are just cogs to work it so that their companies can profit from it. After thinking about it and writing my thoughts down repeatedly, it made me sick to my stomach. These companies take these young, passionate, talented people and turn them into puppets...
Some fans are calling Kris a traitor and other such things, but can you really blame him for leaving? When you aren't respected as a human being, let alone an artist, something has to be done. Humans aren't meant to be kept in cages, whether a literal cage with iron bars, or one shaped like an entertainment company.
Then I decided to look beyond Kris and SM. I remembered articles I had read in the past and brushed off. B.A.P's constant promotion cycles with no rest, Secret only allowed one meal a day, T-ara members only getting two to three hours of sleep a night, not to mention Hwayoung's ugly departure. And so much more, too many horror stories to count.
I had let myself become a part of the machine, supporting the grind of its gears, and I couldn't let myself do that anymore. The night before I left for Germany I deleted every single Kpop song I had off of my iPod.
Every. Single. Song.
Let me tell you, I have a good chunk of space available now...
It's bizarre really, seeing how this one thing took over my life. Kpop affected how I thought about the world, about music, and about myself. I was so obsessed and in so deep it was unhealthy. I've only been away from it for two weeks and I already feel so much better.
I'm not constantly comparing my looks to girl groups, I'm not trying to make art conform to anyone else's standards but my own...it's like I've found my true self again.
Though as I'm writing this, I did add a few groups back on. Namely JYJ and Block B. Those two groups have made names for themselves with companies that treat them fairly (as far as we know), and have found a way around the most hideous parts of the Kpop machine.
It's tough though. I'll find myself looking for a song and realize I deleted it, and the fact that a large majority of my friends still listen to it makes me a little uncomfortable. I just don't want to talk about it anymore, and whenever I see someone post something about their favorite Kpop idol, I have to scroll past.
After all of the emotional ups and downs, what I have it down to is this:
I will not listen to Kpop music unless it's from a company that treats its artists well. So far, that comes to JYJ, Block B, U-Kiss (though that may be debatable for some), and any independent musicians that I can find. The groups that I loved for so long I now have to push away.
It's not like I don't want to support the idols. I do. I think they're all talented and wonderful. I just can't support them because their companies profit off of them. And the only way things are going to change is if those companies lose money. That's the only language they know.
But this change can't start with me. It can't start with international fans. It has to start in South Korea, with South Korean fans, since those fans are the ones with the power, and the ones paying most of the money. Unfortunately, those are the fans that are most loyal to the companies.
I have a feeling it will take a great many years before we see any change to the machine, but until then, I'll be hoping that these idols can survive. That they can be okay, even though their careers are in the hands of greedy businessmen.
I think about the members of EXO still. I hear about their injuries from friends, and I hate to know that they let themselves be treated so terribly.
But then I think of Kris. It's bittersweet, but I know he has a chance for a new beginning. He has another chance to define himself as an artist, to pave his own path. I'll be waiting to see what he does, and whatever it is, I'm sure it will be great.
Thank you, Kris. Thank you for the wake up call that I so desperately needed. Thank you for standing up for yourself.
I hope that young Kpop fans who read this will have a few second thoughts before they choose which companies to support. I hope that this decision I've made with Kpop can transfer to all music, to all companies.
This situation has helped me start on a path to being a conscious consumer, and a better person. It's time for the idols in shiny costumes to go away, and to be replaced with something real.
You know what, I don't usually go on a soapbox and leave long-ass rants on somebody else's blog. But cripes, the delusion here..
ReplyDeleteI actually support you on quitting K-pop because of the oppression behind the system. There are too many awful things that idols go through (Jay Park getting kicked out of the group, JYJ systematically banned not just by SM but the restoof the entertainment industry as well). The more you get to know about the K-pop industry, the more you wish you haven't.
But because of Kris? Out of all the fucked up, shitty things that happen on K-pop, Kris leaving EXO is definitely NOT just because of systematic oppresion.
He doesn't even have a solid reason of leaving the group just right BEFORE they had their concert. He left the group and willingly screwed over the rest of his groupmates. Do you know how much work it takes re-working the choreography just a scant few days before the actual event? Or re-organizing their entire setlist, their entire discography, concert goods, promotional material and not to mention re-negotiating pre-existing contracts?
Kris does not want to be an idol anymore. That is not a secret, that was what his brief disappearing stunt back in Spring 2013 was all about. If you've been following the group since then, you should have known that. His stunt delayed their comeback for about two months. Back then, there were rumors he was already talking with reps of Chinese agencies. The fandom dismissed them, because seriously? Kris has the looks, but quite frankly from his duration in the group, he can't act to save his life. And whoever the fuck would pick up him up, should be someone who has the big guns because SM's lawsuit history is already infamous.
If Kris actually left back then, that would've been okay. If Kris left before their Overdose comeback, well that means a lot more work re-working their choreo and everything but that's ultimately his choice.
But bailing out of the group just right before they had their first leg of their Asian tour??
I am constantly amazed that most people immediately think of Kris, why NOT the other members? Do you seriously think the members were happy with how he left? You have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see their reactions.
His myocarditis is a fucking joke, did his team actually released ANYTHING that proved he had it? All his PR team could release through Sina are reports that alleged he COULD have it. Any experienced medical technician would have analyzed the results he (and by he, I refer to Kris and associates--his legal team and whoever the fuck is backing him up) leaked and would've come to the same conclusion--how the hell was that indicative of myocarditis?? Kris and Co. did not even have the guts to release his personal echocardiogram to PROVE he had it.
Copy-pasting because I can't find the link right now but google if you want to see the source:
ReplyDeleteFrom someone in the medical profession, I would just like to highlight how unlikely the blood test seems to be suggestive of myocarditis.
1) The two elevated blood markers CK and CKMB are notorious for being highly unspecific for cardiac disease. Yes they are elevated in cardiac disease, however, they are also elevated in muscle damage. I won't be surprised if all of the Exo members or any idol members would have some degree of raised CKMB simply because they're subjected to high intensive exercise all the time. In addition, I think CKMB was just mildly raised. (I think 200 as opposed to 175). I would have expected it to be much raised in someone with myocarditis. (ie. 600-700++) .
And if the doctor was testing for cardiac disease, I'd expect to see a test for Troponin markers, which is the universal blood cardiac enzymes that are usually tested in hospital.
2) The entire list of blood test is a little strange for a 20+year old. The series of tests are basically divided into your liver enzymes (LFT), your lipid panel (TG, HDL, LDL, Cholestrol), and the CK & CKMB results. Lipid panel is not usually done in a normal 23 year old healthy kid. So idk, I'm not even inclined to think that this list of result is even his. In fact, this is the exact barrage of test I'd run to check a 50+ year old if I should start him on simvastatin use. (Medical Jargon if anyone's interested: simvastatin is a drug used to reduce cholesterol levels, but associated with liver damage (raised LFT) and rhabdomyolysis (raised CK,CKMB). Hence the barrage of test.)
Anyway and prior to this, there hasn't been any fan accounts suggesting that kris was even sick in the first place, and his legal team has yet to give a statement regarding his health, it is quite unlikely that he has myocarditis. If he was sick, I trust that the korean/chinese fans would have picked it up way earlier than this.
Here's another: http://krislawsuittruth.tumblr.com/post/86077996606/source
Oh, Kris went to some specialized hospital for cardiology? But Fuwai Hospital is actually a generic public hospital, had no idea they specialized in cardiology all of a sudden. BTW, thanks to Kris tons of fans went to the hospital and created a traffic jam and ambulances couldn't get in and out of there.
In all honesty, I wouldn't have been so angry if he just left. Even if he left at the worst possible moment, which was right before the concert. Even if he had to make up stuff about his health so he'd have a more legitimate reason to end the contract asap. If he had to do it to get the right PR from fans, even if it doesn't hold a candle in the court unless he could actually prove his diagnosis.
But Kris and Co. didn't just leave it there. His friends like Kevin Shin alleged on their Instagram posts that EXO bullied him, his PR team manipulated the search terms in Baidu for the other members (wonderful examples: Chanyeol rapes his niece, Yixing backstabs Kris) and harmed their reputation and deleted all the related search terms for EXO in Yinyuetai. And his stans even dragged Yixing's mom in their quest to taint the rest of the members down.
And that's not the extent of the damage. The remaining members have to pay the adjustment to every previous contract they've had with Kris in it. All the contracts they made state that there are 12 members, if there's one missing, it's EXO who will have to pay the penalty for it. This was inevitable the moment somebody left the group, so it's not something I'm particularly angry at him for. http://lu-han.net/post/85898359244/some-questions-that-need-to-be-answered
ReplyDeleteBut his lawsuit planned out beforehand to inflict maximum damage against his previous affiliation (EXO included)? Even if it was Kai or Tao or someone elose who filed the lawsuit, I will have no qualms dropping them like a hot potato if they carefully planned how they left the group to take advantage of it for their own.
The Chinese admins of his fansite even knew about his lawsuit WAY BEFORE the news was released. http://xuntaomian.tumblr.com/post/85985595291/exo-kr-the-admins-from-kris-bar-weibo-knew Amazing, his admins knew but he didn't even tell his own members.
Here's some update regarding his condition:
@wufanqins: 爱奇艺娱乐 said that Wu Yifan recorded songs & has finished shooting for Tiny Times 3”
Definitely, I can see how he was suffering from some life-threatening heart condition alright. And wow, Tiny Times is a huge movie in China (It is billed with top actors thanks to Yuehwa). I'm so glad Kris got himself a new movie, a new agency and a brand new life so fast! Gee, he sure SACRIFICED a lot for EXO. He sure took a stand to fight the good fight for the rest of the members and fuck off to SM and their army of slaves.
If there's one thing I can still applaud Kris for, he sure got himself a solid company. Yuehwa is also Hangeng's same agency along with other A-list actors/actresses in the Chinese industry.
Kris is no Hangeng or even JYJ. Just a comparison to these two is disgusting. When Hangeng filed his lawsuit, he did it quietly, without fanfare and drama. He had his reasons immediately stated. JYJ also came up with legitimate reasons apart from the harsh treatment they got from SM that Kris and his legal team happily copied.
And I didn't even touch on your hypocrisy on turning a blind eye on J-pop when there's equally oppressing stuff that happens there. Do you seriously think UFA doesn't have its own share of shady shit? All entertainment systems are designed to make money, Hollywood, K-pop, J-pop, wherever it is in the world. That does NOT excuse or condone any of the sickening things that happen to people who work in these industries, but it's one thing to valiantly crusade for change and another to turn a blind eye to something equally disturbing.
First of all, thank you for your comments!
DeleteNow, to get right to it, Kris isn't the sole reason I'm leaving the mainstream Kpop fandom and becoming critical of it. This issue was just the straw that broke the camel's back. As I stated in the original post, I know that SM isn't the only company to treat their idols terribly.
Now, considering the timing of his departure, it may not have been completely up to him. Lawsuits like this take months to prepare, and it's ultimately the firm's decision when it's time to strike. And honestly it would've caused trouble for the EXO members at any point in time. No matter when he (and his law firm) chose to file suit, fans would be angry, the group members would be angry, the company would be angry. There is no getting around that. No matter when he left, he would create more work to be done for the rest of them. There was no getting around that.
As for the strange contents of the blood tests, everyone's body is different. I know plenty of younger people who have health issues that don't show up until later in life, unfortunately, myself included. Everyone's body is different, and I don't think it's a fan's job to rummage through his medical records and decide whether he's healthy or not, it's a doctor's job, and I can understand why he wouldn't release that information. It's very personal, and until there is a definitive diagnosis, releasing information is pointless.
What some Kris fans did on Weibo was wrong, but Kris can't control the actions of his fans. Just as he made a choice to leave, those fans made their own choices to bully the other members and their families. The only people who can make those choices are the fans themselves.
It isn't confirmed that Yuehwa has signed Kris. A representative of the company said that his mother never talked to them and that it was a rumor being spread by fans.
I'm sure Kris was anticipating some media antics, but this has turned into a circus, and I don't think anyone could have premeditated how huge this would get.
As for the rest of the EXO members, I can understand to some degree how they feel. I work in the music industry. I've had group members back out on me a week before a show, and I had to reorganize the whole thing. And it really sucks when people back out on you. It hurts. But it all comes down to people and their choices, and life goes on. The other EXO members made their choice to stay with the company, and life will go on for them. They have a company with a lot of power, so their careers shouldn't suffer.
There's a saying "Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves." SM and the media have given Kris a hell of a lot of rope. In my personal opinion, I think he's doing the right thing by staying quiet. There's enough slander going around about him that if he were to say something, it would just get worse. The same goes with the other EXO members. They've said their piece, and they don't need to say anything else about it.
And finally, on the point of Jpop and Hollywood: trust me. I know. I know there are terrible things going on in those businesses as well. There has been for years.
But this post was about Kpop in particular. If I had tried to make this post about all three industries, it would be a novel and it would be messy as hell. I'm definitely interested in making a post on Jpop idols, female idols in particular, and the issues they deal with. If you have any suggestions on some research I can do for that, send me some links and I'll look into it.
This whole issue sucks, no matter which way you look at it and what side you're on, but either way, life will go on, and hopefully all twelve of these guys will be okay and happy.
